Wait a minute! That's not Floyd Mayweather Jr., folks -- that's Floyd Mayweather, Sr., the boxer's father and longtime trainer, who's 64 years old.
Mayweather (Jr.) is on the wrong side of his career arc at 40 years old, while McGregor is in the heart of his prime at 28. The age difference has been one reason that more discerning fight fans have written off the bout's potential even though it's been hyped for months through rumors and reports. And now that same age difference is being used by McGregor for some excellent pre-fight digital trash-talk.
Beautiful.
Another reason some have cast doubt on the fight's potential is that Mayweather and McGregor don't even compete in the same sport. The August 26 bout will be a boxing match, and it's certainly true that Mayweather is a boxer. But McGregor is a trained mixed martial-artist who will enter the ring with a significant experience disadvantage when it comes to boxing's rules, which are much stricter than those of the the MMA fights to which he's accustomed.
There is scant history of cross-discipline fights. Muhammad Ali took on Japanese wrestler Antonio Inoki in 1976. That same night, wrestler Andre the Giant fought boxer Chuck Wepner. Then there was the wrestler "Thunderlips," played by Hulk Hogan, taking on Rocky Balboa in Rocky III. But that last bout, of course, was fictional.
So will Mayweather vs. McGregor on August 26 live up to its mountainous hype? Or will this fight be a boring dud? We'll find out for real just over two months from now. Finally.
