"I was asked to go to Russia by an acquaintance I knew from the 2013 Miss Universe pageant to meet with an individual who I was told might have information helpful to my show," Stephen Colbert said in a statement. "Donald Trump Jr.'s father knew nothing of the meeting or these events. Or evidently, much else."

In a reply to Donald Trump's tweet denying tapes or recordings made of fired FBI director James Comey on June 22, Colbert said he'd go and find them in Russia.

On the following Monday, Colbert spoke about the supposedly "secret" trip on his show.

Given the increasing curiosity in Trump and his relationship with Russian President Vladimir Putin, the timing couldn't be more perfect.
